Study looks at wheat allergies in infants

A study released in this month’s journal Pediatrics issues a strong challenge to the notion that babies should be exclusively breastfed, and not given any solid foods, during the first six months of life. Jill Poole, M.D., assistant professor in the pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy section of the department of internal medicine at UNMC, is lead author of the study.

Smoking cessation program to use innovative tool

It’s slightly bigger than a pack of cigarettes, but today’s hand-held computers still fit inside a shirt pocket. Lynne Buchanan, Ph.D., is counting on that accessibility. An associate professor in the UNMC College of Nursing, Dr. Buchanan is asking smokers to reach for the specially designed Personal Digital Assistant to help distract and delay their urge to smoke.

Dr. Maurer honored by his alma mater

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., has received the Clark-Curran Award in Medical Administration from his alma mater, State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. The award recognizes Dr. Maurer’s outstanding teaching ability and contributions to medical administration.

Henderson to head Southeast Nebraska AHEC

Robyn Henderson was recently named the executive director of the new Southeast Nebraska Area Health Education Center (SE-AHEC). Henderson previously served as assistant director of the Rural Health Education Network and program director for the Nebraska SEARCH program at UNMC.

Bibliographic management program available free

RefWorks, a bibliographic management program similar to EndNote and Reference Manager, is now available to all UNMC-affiliated faculty, staff and students without charge. A RefWorks-affiliated trainer will be on campus June 13 to demonstrate features of the program.

College of Nursing Lincoln Division appoints new assistant dean

Kathleen Duncan, Ph.D., associate professor of nursing, UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division, assumed the role of assistant dean June 1. She succeeds Lani Zimmerman, Ph..D., who has held the position since 1995.

Salaries, health insurance outlined at forums

Beginning July 1, UNMC faculty and staff will receive an average salary increase of 3.95 percent, with individual increases made on the basis of performance.
