Director of federal agency to speak at nursing conference
Carolyn Clancy, M.D., director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will speak Monday during the 31st Midwest Nursing Research Society Conference in Omaha. The conference, which is being hosted by the UNMC College of Nursing, will be held March 23-26.

Dr. Wiltse donates photographs to pediatrics department
Hobart “Hobe” Wiltse, M.D., Ph.D., retired professor in the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, has always been recognized for his caring demeanor and for giving his time to students and patients. Dr. Wiltse, who retired in 2002 after 37 years on the faculty, has continued his tradition of giving back to UNMC by recently donating 19 of his favorite photographs to the department of pediatrics.

Dr. Ghorpade receives 2007 Gilmore Award
In the highly competitive world of biomedical research, Anuja Ghorpade, Ph.D. — recipient of the 2007 Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award — may be an anomaly. Although most researchers are encouraged to find their niche at another institution after completing post-doctoral fellowships, Dr. Ghorpade has spent her entire 12-year career at UNMC.

Medical center offering breakthrough prostate cancer therapy
A new kind of radiation therapy is targeting cancer the same way a Global Positioning System, or GPS, pinpoints the location of your car. The Calypso 4D Localization System is now being offered to prostate cancer patients at The Nebraska Medical Center, one of only five medical centers worldwide to attain the Calypso technology.

Dr. Freifeld helps shape cancer treatment guidelines
UNMC’s Alison Freifeld, M.D., spoke at the 12th annual conference of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), advising medical colleagues in oncology representing cancer centers across the country on the prevention and treatment of infections in patients with cancer.

Tears followed a sigh of relief for Katie Monson as she stood on stage at Joslyn Art Museum’s Witherspoon Hall with her fiance, John Black. The couple, who will graduate from the UNMC College of Medicine and get married in May, learned they would both be heading to the University of Virginia for their residencies. Black and Monson were among the 119 fourth-year medical students from UNMC who learned Thursday where they would do their residencies.
