Tom Brokaw to receive Ambassador of Hope Award

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center will recognize legendary newscaster Tom Brokaw with the prestigious Ambassador of Hope Award on Oct. 13, at Qwest Center Omaha. The event marks the first time the Ambassador of Hope Gala will be broadcast to other locations in the state.

UNMC to break ground on second research tower

The University of Nebraska Medical Center will break ground on a $74 million research tower on Tuesday, Aug. 8, the second such tower to be built at the Omaha campus this decade.
The ceremonial groundbreaking will honor the principal donor to the two towers, legendary Omaha businessman Chuck Durham, president and CEO of Durham Resources.
“No one has embraced our research vision more than Chuck Durham. It’s appropriate to recognize his unmatched contributions to our research enterprise as we mark this milestone,” UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said.

Workshop attracts surprising response

The idea was to have a small workshop on structural biology and molecular biophysics. The expectations were low. As one of the workshop organizers, Kathryn Cleaves, an administrator in the Eppley Institute, said: “We were worried that only 10 people would show up.”

The end result is that more than 150 people have signed up for the workshop, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.

Jewell helps motorists drive by the book

By day, Lisa Jewell provides young people with hands-on experiences in hopes of them choosing careers in the health profession. At her part-time job, as an instructor for the National Safety Council Greater Omaha Chapter, she teaches people to be safe on the road in order to keep them from ending up in the hospital.

Rural physical therapist first to complete geriatric mini-fellowship

North Platte Physical Therapist William Mackley is the first health professional in Nebraska to complete the Geriatric Mini-fellowship offered through the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Nebraska Geriatric Education Center (NEBGEC). Dr. Mackley completed the distance learning program in June and eventually will be followed by more than 100 other health professionals in the state currently enrolled in the program.
