Camp Munroe kids enjoy petting zoo

Children participating in the 2006 Munroe-Meyer Institute Camp Munroe program received an extra special treat last month. Mark and Lori Celesky of Boarding House Farms, Inc., an educational animal display company, brought half a dozen animals to campus so the kids could enjoy their own personal petting zoo.

Antibiotic study shows promise in treating infections

UNMC researchers are part of an international team whose study results offer the medical world another drug – daptomycin — to treat the growing threat of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The article appears in the Aug. 17 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

Research shows promise for reducing burden of HIV treatment

UNMC is conducting research targeted at reducing the daily HIV/AIDS multiple pill regimen to a single monthly injection using a nanotechnology drug delivery system. By using macrophages, the cells that carry HIV throughout the body, researchers have successfully delivered anti-retroviral drugs directly to tissues where the virus grows.

Regents extend resident tuition eligibility to state’s veterans

Veterans of all branches of the U.S. armed services will be eligible to attend the University of Nebraska at in-state (resident) tuition rates under an amendment to the university’s tuition policy approved by the Board of Regents on July 28.

New Web-based antivenom index now available

Launched on Aug. 10, the Online Antivenom Index is a Web-based database allowing doctors, poison control centers and hospitals to access up-to-date information about antivenom stocked at AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums. Steven Seifert, M.D., professor in the department of surgery, emergency medicine section, at UNMC, and medical director of the Nebraska Regional Poison Center, was one of the team members that helped develop the index.

Teri Hartman knows how to find information on all types of diseases for visitors of the McGoogan Library of Medicine. Now she’s immersed in her own research. Hartman, head of education and assistant professor of the McGoogan Library of Medicine, has been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare and unpredictable form of cancer found mostly in the head and neck.
