West Nile survivors join study to unlock mystery

Meet 93-year-old Helen Uher who became severely ill with West Nile virus in 2003. Uhr is among 300 Nebraskans who have volunteered for a study to determine why some people become severely ill with the mosquito-borne virus while others don’t even know they’ve been infected.

Employee satisfaction survey to begin Sept. 12

The satisfaction and commitment of UNMC faculty and staff continues to be a critical success factor in UNMC’s strategic plan. In 2002 and 2004, UNMC conducted confidential surveys that measured employee satisfaction and perceptions. Beginning Sept. 12, a 32-question survey will be sent to reassess the perceptions of current, regular employees.

Dr. William Berndt, former UNMC chancellor, dies

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 for William Berndt, Ph.D., former chancellor of UNMC. He died Thursday, Aug. 31 at The Nebraska Medical Center due to ongoing lung complications. Dr. Berndt, 73, joined UNMC in 1982 and held several key administrative posts over the next 20 plus years, serving as chancellor from 1996 to 1998.

UNMC offers treatment option for some MS patients

Jane Fallon is hoping for a cure – or even a partial one – for her multiple sclerosis (MS). Fallon’s disease has relapsed so she was happy to learn that Tysabri, a drug once taken off the market, is available again. Physicians say a vast majority of patients with MS may benefit.
