Looking back with Walter Friedlander, M.D.

In honor of the College of Medicine’s 125th Anniversary, UNMC Today spoke with some retired faculty members and reflected on their years in the college.

Today we hear from Walter Friedlander, M.D., who founded both the department of neurology (now the department of neurosciences) and the department of medical humanities and jurisprudence (now the department of preventive and societal medicine) at UNMC. Dr. Friedlander retired in 1984.

Today we hear from Robert Grissom, M.D., professor emeritus from the department of cardiology. Dr. Grissom was at UNMC from 1953 until his retirement in 1987.

Adult stem cells in rat retinas may hold key to restoring sight

The discovery of adult stem cells in the retina of rats may hold the key to restoring the sight of those blinded by macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa or glaucoma. Those were the findings of a UNMC study published in the November issue of Developmental Biology, a leading science journal.

Looking back with Hobart Wiltse, M.D.

In honor of the College of Medicine’s 125th Anniversary, UNMC Today spoke with some retired faculty members and reflected on their years in the college. Today we hear from Hobart Wiltse, M.D., a retired professor from the department of pediatrics who spent 37 years on the faculty. He served as professor from 1977 to 2002 and his specialty was taking care of children with metabolic disorders.

Not bad for a kid from Aurora. That was the response from Rodney Markin, M.D., Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of UNMC Physicians, regarding news that Cory Shaw had been named to the Midlands Business Journal’s 40 under 40 list.

Nursing students help underserved, see disparities first hand

Fidgety children, long lines of patients and no paycheck. For more than 30 volunteers at Lincoln’s Clinic with a Heart, these are small inconveniences for providing health care for those who cannot afford it.
