Tuesday deemed day of mourning; UNMC offices will be closed

UNMC offices will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 2 in observance of a national day of mourning for former President Gerald R. Ford. Tuesday will be considered a day of (paid) administrative leave for all leave-eligible employees.

Hospital expands car safety seat screening program

Car safety seats are meant to keep children safe given that the car seat fits the child and it is used correctly each and every car ride. However, near term infants may be at risk for potential respiratory difficulties when placed in a semi-upright position in a car safety seat. The Nebraska Medical Center is the first hospital in Omaha to expand its car safety seat screening program to all near term infants.

Study results may explain some diabetic effects on the brain

A UNMC research team has found a potential explanation for some of the effects of diabetes on the central nervous system. The discovery, which is reported in the Oct. 18 edition of Brain Research, could potentially explain the adverse affects of diabetes on parts of the brain that regulate bodily functions and sometimes, learning and memory.

UNMC employees soon will receive a personal CD of the self-study report for reaccreditation. The CDs, titled “Building A World-Renowned Health Science Center,” are being sent to all employee mailboxes through campus mail.

Dr. Snyder brings smiles to patients in Nicaragua

For Mary Snyder, M.D., vacations are a time to work harder than ever. “This past October I spent a week in Nicaragua repairing cleft lips and palates. In that one week, I performed 40 surgeries,” Dr. Snyder said. “It was my second trip this year and my third in 18 months.”

UNMC-led panel educates legislators about health issues

The University of Nebraska recently hosted three policy seminars designed to help new and experienced state legislators anticipate and understand issues they may face in the upcoming session of the unicameral. The seminar topics focused on water, criminal justice and health care policy. UNMC designed and conducted the seminar on health care policy.

For the tenth time in the past 14 years, the incoming freshman class at the UNMC College of Dentistry had the highest incoming grade point average of any first-year dental school class in the country.
