Avian flu education — advance preparation is key

International health experts say a pandemic is inevitable at some point in the future. Scientists are concerned that a pandemic from the H5N1 virus may emerge soon because two of the three conditions for an avian flu pandemic already exist with the H5N1 virus.

Powwow exhibit a must-see on Passport Partners Day

Among the many spectacular exhibits that can be seen during the Joslyn Art Museum Passport Partners Employee Day on Saturday is one titled “Faces from the Land: A Photographic Journey through Native America.” The exhibit, which features astonishing photographs of American Indian powwow dancers, has a special place in the heart of Terri Kalinowski, coordinator of The Nebraska Medical Center thrift store.

James Lane, M.D., always wanted to lead a diabetes center. Now he will. Dr. Lane, associate professor in the section of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism at UNMC, has been named director of The Nebraska Medical Center Diabetes Center.

Snowmen invade College of Pharmacy

Sometime late Tuesday, 41 snowpeople appeared on the south side of the UNMC College of Pharmacy. The snow figures, each with twig arms, bark eyes and a carrot nose, met with chuckles from UNMC students, faculty and staff.

Rare heart surgery performed at The Nebraska Medical Center

A world-class procedure and a first for North America. A life threatening aneurysm is successfully repaired at The Nebraska Medical Center using a complex technique dubbed the “frozen elephant trunk.” Published medical reports indicate this is the first time this groundbreaking procedure has been completed in the United States or Canada.
