Million-step Monday – McFadden and Carstens repeat
Marathoner Greg McFadden logged 549,213 steps in December to become the first repeat winner of the Gold Shoe award. The Silver Shoe, meanwhile, seems to have found a permanent home in Julie Carstens’ office at the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Workshop aimed at improving scientists’ public speaking skills

This skill is particularly important for post doctoral students, fellows and junior investigators. For individuals who have no public speaking experience or those who are interested in sharpening their skills, the UNMC Office of Postdoctoral Education is sponsoring a public speaking workshop in February.

Dr. Zucker named 2007 scientist laureate
Irving Zucker, Ph.D., has been named the second UNMC Scientist Laureate for his outstanding research into heart failure. The award is the highest recognition given to a UNMC scientist.

Texas physician named chairman of pediatrics
A Texas neonatologist, John Sparks, M.D., has been named chairman of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics. The appointment, which was effective Jan. 1, was announced today by John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.
