Novel technology developed by UNMC’s Paul Dunman, Ph.D., played a critical role in Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s discovery of a novel way to inhibit and potentially kill the deadly Staph bacteria by starving it of the nutrients it requires to survive.

A UNMC research team has helped scientists from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in discovering a protein that starves staphylococcus bacteria to death by hiding the metals they crave. The findings are published in Science.

Lunch and learn on affirmative action ban Feb. 21

UNMC researchers making strides to prevent birth defects
To see her now, Michelle Vitamvas is a picture of health. But two months after she was born, Vitamvas was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot — a heart defect that caused her to have a blue appearance because of reduced oxygen in the blood. … But Vitamvas, now 32, and others born with congenital heart defects are living healthy, productive lives thanks to research advances such as those forged by team of UNMC’s Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D.
