Committee to develop UNMC’s plans for smoke-free campus
A campus committee has been charged by Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance Don Leuenberger to develop a plan to make UNMC a completely smoke-free campus.

This week is a bit special in that we feature Joyce Sikora, SAP coordinator, who will retire at the end of this month after working at UNMC for 41 years. The campus is invited to a retirement tea for Sikora today from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Wittson Hall, Room 3042.

New UNMC microscope first of its kind in the state
A critical new fluorescence microscope and reader now provides researchers at UNMC the ability to capture images of cells and to analyze changes in their size, shape, motility, intensity and other cellular properties.

Wellness Wednesday — coping with holiday stress
When I was a kid, I never understood what my parents meant when they talked about holiday stress. The way I saw it, this time of year was awesome! You get neat presents. You get to hang out with your cool older cousins at family gatherings. There’s lots of football on television. What could possibly be so stressful about the holidays?

Potential hope for treatment of neurological, ocular diseases
A team of UNMC researchers has found that a naturally-occurring enzyme in the human brain can reduce the effects of oxidative stress on brain cells. Oxidative stress is the key factor in damage caused by epilepsy, stroke, dementia and ocular diseases.

The UNMC Office of Postdoctoral Education and Research is offering a scientific writing workshop, “Writing to Persuade,” to post doctoral researchers and young researchers who want to improve their manuscript and grant writing skills.
