Leading up the Dec. 12 opening of Mark Gilbert’s “Here I Am and Nowhere Else: Portraits of Care” at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, UNMC Today will run a series of essays that detail the experiences of patients, loved ones and health care workers who were exposed to the project.

Apathy study funded by Alzheimer’s Association
Prasad Padala, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at UNMC and a staff psychiatrist at the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System, received a New Investigator Research Grant from the Alzheimer’s Association, the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research.

Toy drive to benefit American Indian children
It all started with a simple offer of help. Three years ago on a drive with a friend to an American Indian reservation in South Dakota, Mike Cieciorka, a nurse in the cardiology clinic at UNMC, agreed to help raise money to buy toys for Christmas for the children who live there.

Max Kurz, Ph.D., is back. The Omaha native returned to his roots recently after serving as a professor in the Health and Human Performance Department at the University of Houston where he taught biomechanics for three years.
