UNMC/NHS help kick off Race for the Kids with April 24 campus event
On Wednesday, April 24, UNMC/NHS Community Partnership and the UNMC/NHS Employee Diversity Network will co-sponsor a presentation of performances by children from Omaha Public Schools. The event will be from noon to 1 p.m., in the grassy area east of the link between NHS Clarkson Hospital and UNMC.
The program will publicize the May 11 city wide ConAgra Foods “Race for the Kids” — a benefit race for All Our Kids Foundation, Inc. — on the ConAgra Foods campus. Ward Chambers, M.D., executive director of UNMC/NHS Community Partnership, is a member of the board of directors for the All Our Kids Foundation, Inc.

CityMatCH helps cities translate infant mortality data into action
An infant mortality report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) underscores the need for cities to define and execute data-driven strategies to eliminate racial and ethnic differences in infant mortality.
“Every city must be ready and able to translate its data into action to safeguard the health and well-being of its youngest residents,” said Magda Peck, Sc.D., one of the report’s co-authors and chief executive officer/executive director of CityMatCH, a national public health organization based at UNMC. “That is what CityMatCH is all about.”

Dillard University faculty member shares campus’ tradition, diversity
Go ahead and ask Cathy Bernosky de Flores how it feels to be a white faculty member at the historically black Dillard University in New Orleans? It’s OK, she actually loves the question. It’s just another opportunity for her to explain why “Dillard feels just like home.” De Flores is studying for her doctorate at UNMC’s College of Nursing.

Dr. Ghorpade receives 2002 Vada Kinman Oldfield Alzheimer’s Research Award
Anuja Ghorpade, Ph.D., chief of Laboratory for Cellular Neuroimmunology at UNMC’s Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders and the scientific director of the Rapid Autopsy Program, is the 2002 recipient of the Vada Kinman Oldfield Alzheimer’s Research Fund Award. The Oldfield Award will be presented Monday, April 22, at 11:30 a.m. in the Healing Gardens of the Lied Transplant Center.

Information Security Awareness Week features seminars for health-care community
To raise awareness of information technology security issues, Gov. Mike Johanns has proclaimed April 20-26 Information Security Awareness Week.
“Of particular note to the health-care community are town hall meetings and a three-day HIPAA (Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) conference which will address issues of confidentiality and security of health-care information,” said Dan Moser, Ph.D., associate director of Information Technology Services at UNMC.

UNMC signs agreement with historically black college
Two years ago, Sherman Petite visited the 48-acre campus of Louisiana’s first historically black college with one goal: to recruit students.
Serendipitously, he met with Dillard University Provost Bettye Parker-Smith, Ph.D., who raised the possibility of developing an affiliation agreement with UNMC. Petite’s supervisor, John McClain, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNMC, agreed it was a wonderful opportunity. So did other UNMC administrators.
On Tuesday, Dr. McClain and Petite watched as Dillard University President Michael Lomax, Ph.D., and UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., formalized the agreement during a signing ceremony in Omaha. The historic signing — which follows a December signing ceremony at Dillard University — marks UNMC’s first formal affiliation with an historically black college.

Kouba receives April Gold ‘U’ Award
Brenda Kouba’s biggest challenge in recruiting medical technologists is that the program is a mystery to teachers and students.
“People don’t know who we are and what we do,” she said. “That’s our biggest hurdle.”
But, Kouba, a staff assistant in UNMC’s medical technology program, is helping to change that by promoting the role and importance of medical technologists to students, guidance counselors and all who will listen. For her dedication, outstanding office management and recruiting skills in the School of Allied Health Professions, Kouba has received the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for April.
