Fetal-tissue bill fails for third time
A legislative bill that would limit fetal-tissue research at UNMC — as well as limit the ability of Nebraskans to receive benefits of future medical research — stalled Wednesday for the third year in a row.

Through Jan. 21, UNMC Today will feature photos and quotations from Martin Luther King Jr. and his political counterpart, Malcolm X. Today’s selections concern the involvement of children in social protest activities. The feature will culminate in the Jan. 21 presentation of “The Meeting” at 11:45 a.m. in the Lower Storz of NHS Clarkson Hospital.

Changes to simplify publication of online newsletter
UNMC Today has met its first goal of the year: to slim down its publication process. Posted earlier in the day, the 2-year-old online employee newsletter will continue to carry a full scope of stories, announcements, news-related links and other campus information. In recent weeks, the e-mail notice sent to UNMC faculty and staff each day has been condensed to primarily include news headlines and links to other sections in the UNMC Intranet.

Stammers leaves legacy of excellence in UNMC’s clinical education program
While Al Stammers was in junior high school, he told his mother he hoped to be a teacher one day. His mother, a homemaker with no advanced education, warned him to always be careful as an educator and understand the power he would have as a teacher – to never neglect his responsibility to do the very best for all of his students.
As Mary Haven, associate dean of the School of Allied Health Professions, noted at Stammers’ going away reception on Jan. 10, there is no overstating how deeply Stammers took his mother’s message to heart during 10 years as director of SAHP division of clinical perfusion education.
