“People forget I’m not a librarian,” said Ferryman, whose outstanding performance has earned her the Chancellor’s Gold ‘U’ Award for August.

ABC’s Good Morning America comes to UNMC/NHS
ABC producer Bill Cunningham spent several hours on the UNMC/NHS campus last month gathering video for Good Morning America’s “50 States, One Nation, One Year” project.
The segments on Nebraska – including one on UNMC/NHS – is scheduled to air Sept. 2. Good Morning America, anchored by Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson, airs weekdays from 7 to 9 a.m. on KETV Channel 7.

Energy-saving campaign yields results
The UNMC/NHS energy conservation campaign is making a difference.
“For the most part we are seeing a marked improvement of 5 percent to as much as a 10 percent reduction in peak electrical consumption,” said Nick Combs, UNMC’s manager of Maintenance and Utilities. “Now we need to ensure that this is not momentary, but something we do consistently.”

The campus is invited to celebrate the UNMC College of Medicine’s centennial history Thursday, Aug. 22 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
James Armitage, M.D., COM dean, will give a welcome and Robert Wigton, M.D., COM associate dean and resident historian, will give the historical presentation. There will be free pizza and soda while supplies last.

Coalition forms to promote safety belt usage
Susanna Von Essen, M.D., and Robert Muelleman, M.D., medical director of NHS emergency services, are members of a statewide coalition geared to educate drivers and passengers about the importance of buckling up in all positions of the vehicle. The “Click It – Don’t Risk It” coalition is presenting a statewide awareness campaign with the goal of saving lives by increasing safety belt usage to 80 percent by 2004.

BRIN scholars complete research opportunities
In 2001, a three-year, $6 million federal grant led five Nebraska undergraduate institutions and three Ph.D.-granting universities to create the Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN). As a result, the first 15 BRIN scholars recently completed summer research internships under the guidance and mentorship of faculty at UNMC, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Creighton University. These scholars were selected from five Nebraska institutions — Chadron State College, Nebraska Wesleyan University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Wayne State College and the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
