UNMC chairman helps lead study comparing stenting vs. surgery
UNMC’s Pierre Fayad, M.D., shared results Saturday from the first randomized study that shows stenting is more effective than surgery for patients who were otherwise considered very high risk for standard surgery.

Volunteering for the smallpox vaccination
With 15-needle pricks in his right arm, Steve Hinrichs, M.D., joined the state’s smallpox preparedness team. He received his non-emergency smallpox vaccination at a Douglas County Health Department clinic near 128th and Dodge Sts. See story for photos.

Sen. Nelson procures funds for Durham Research Center
Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson has been instrumental in procuring $2 million in federal funding through the Omnibus appropriations bill for the Durham Research Center now under construction at UNMC.

Morien assumes additional campus post
Marsha Morien has been named administrative director of the University of Nebraska’s Center for Biosecurity. She will continue to serve as administrator of computer assisted medicine and surgery, a post she’s held at UNMC since 1999.

Developing talent, building careers internally
For the past 20 years, Ernest Tanner has served as inventory clerk auditor. Now, bolstered by UNMC’s new career development program, the longtime employee is looking forward to a new career.
Tanner, who plans to attend physical therapy assistant courses in the future, recently completed UNMC’s Foundations for Success program. The program helps employees hone their personal and career development skills.
