Three generations of medical books donated to library
Charles F. Ashby, M.D., of Geneva has donated more than 300 books — spanning three generations of Fillmore County physicians — to the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine. Dr. Ashby, a 1942 graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, is a third-generation physician in Fillmore County.

Spirit of Hope Award given to Liz Karnes
October marked the fourth annual “Bouquet of Hope” program involving 20 florists in eight Nebraska communities. Sponsored by the Friends of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, the program raised close to $2,000 for cancer research at UNMC — making 2002 the best year yet for the program’s efforts. Liz Karnes received this year’s “Spirit of Hope” award, which is given to someone who best personifies extraordinary courage and willingness to help other cancer patients.

Regent-elect Howard Hawks visits campus

UNMC employees receive half day holiday on Dec. 24
Gov. Johanns has announced that all Nebraska state employees will have a half day holiday on Dec. 24 in conjunction with President Bush’s order that federal employees be “excused from duty for the last half of the scheduled workday” on Dec. 24.
In order to implement the governor’s order at UNMC, four hours will be considered paid administrative leave for all holiday eligible employees, and UNMC offices will be closed on the afternoon of Dec. 24.
