Director of smallpox eradication campaign to give Latta lecture
In 1966, Donald A. Henderson, M.D., spent 10 years directing the World Health Organization’s global smallpox eradication campaign. Today, he serves as senior science advisor to the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
On Thursday, Dr. Henderson will be at UNMC to present the 21st John S. Latta Lectureship, sponsored by the UNMC College of Medicine Alumni Association. His noon presentation, titled “Implementing Smallpox Vaccination Strategy: Lessons from History,” will be in the College of Nursing’s Cooper Auditorium.

UNMC College of Nursing and Nebraska Health System will host Paula Rieger as its 12th Visiting Nurse Scholar, March 3 and 4. Rieger is director of international affairs for the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Alexandria, Va.

Two honored at cardiovascular research symposium
UNMC’s seventh annual Cardiovascular Research Symposium ended Feb. 7 with a traditional selection of top poster for basic research and for clinical science. Mark Niebauer, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC associate professor in the department of cardiology, won the clinical science poster award. Wanfen Xiong, M.D., Ph.D., UNMC instructor in the department of surgery research, won the basic science poster award.
