SAHP student, faculty awards honor Drs. Maurer, Berndt, Norman & Hageman

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., William Berndt, Ph.D, vice chancellor for academic affairs, and two other faculty members received top honors earlier this month at the 2002 UNMC School of Allied Health Professions Student and Faculty Awards Ceremony.

Dr. Maurer received the first Outstanding Leadership Award. Dr. Berndt received the Outstanding Service to the Allied Health Professions Award. Joe Norman, Ph.D., associate professor of physical therapy education, received the Teacher of the Year Award and Pat Hageman, Ph.D., associate professor and director of physical therapy education, received the Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award.

UNMC celebrates Dr. Berndt’s campus contributions

For the past 20 years, William Berndt, Ph.D., has been a researcher, teacher, dean, chancellor and vice chancellor. Beginning next month, he plans to add photography, hiking, traveling and lounging to his daily calendar.

On Tuesday, the UNMC community gathered to celebrate Dr. Berndt’s countless contributions to the medical center. The St. Joseph, Mo., native who spent 20 years in several key administrative positions at UNMC retires Friday.

2002 Cattlemen’s Ball to feature first Cancer Hero’s Wall

The 2002 Cattlemen’s Ball will feature its first Cancer Hero’s Wall, with photos, poems and memorabilia of those who have fought cancer. The ball will be Saturday, June 1 at the Benes Cattle Company near Valparaiso, Neb.

Air Force captain earns pharmacy’s Preceptor of Year award

Capt. Joshua Devine, Pharm.D., has gained a reputation as a bit of a task-master among UNMC College of Pharmacy students.

It’s a role that doesn’t bother Dr. Devine, a preceptor for fourth-year students. In fact, he knows that by challenging students, he’s pushing them toward fulfilling their potential as pharmacists. This year’s College of Pharmacy graduates realized the value of the rotation with Dr. Devine, as they voted him the 2002 Preceptor of the Year.

UNMC’s minority graduates are more than new health professionals, one UNMC faculty member said during the 2002 Minority Graduate Recognition Reception. They also are role models for others who aspire to follow in their steps.

First African-American graduates from UNMC’s clinical perfusion education program

Tunisia Ellis, a five-time gold medal winner at the Nebraska state track meet, recently landed the biggest first-place finish of her life. On May 11, she became the first African-American to receive the master’s degree in clinical perfusion education from UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP) — the top perfusion program in the United States.

Native Omahan graduates from UNMC’s College of Pharmacy

Ramon Ulmar remembers how fellow black students teased him because he was a scholarly bookworm. But, Ulmar stayed focus on his academic dreams. Now the 1994 Omaha Northwest High School graduate has his Pharm.D. degree from UNMC’s College of Pharmacy.

Inventor recognition reception May 23

UNeMed Corporation, UNMC’s technology marketing and licensing organization, and the UNMC Intellectual Property Office (IPO), will acknowledge UNMC inventors Thursday, May 23 during this year’s annual Inventors Recognition Reception.

The reception, open to all UNMC inventors, will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the University Hospital Private Dining Room. Thursday’s reception will specifically recognize inventors on six UNMC patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office between February 2000 and December 2001.

Chicago native joins UNMC College of Pharmacy faculty

Beata Ineck, Pharm.D., likes the variety that academic pharmacy offers, and she appreciates how the UNMC College of Pharmacy treats its students as more than just numbers.

She also enjoys making a difference in the lives of primary care patients.
In Omaha, Dr. Ineck will have the opportunity to fill both roles, as the newest college faculty member will split her time between UNMC and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

UNMC/NHS Community Partnership guides women’s group to national acclaim

A North Omaha women’s group has made a big impression in Miami. Mary Hill, founder and president of Sisters Together, returned from the Sixth Annual Community-Campus Partnerships for Health national conference with an award of excellence for a poster that highlights the collaboration between UNMC/NHS Community Partnership and Hill’s organization.
