Nominations sought for inaugural community service award for faculty
A new campus award will honor a UNMC faculty member’s service to the community.
The first-ever Spirit of Community Service Award will be presented at the 2004 Annual Faculty Meeting, which will begin at 4 p.m. on April 20 in the Durham Research Center auditorium. The Outstanding Teaching Awards will be presented at that meeting, as well.

Blum named February Gold U recipient
On the pool deck, Susan Blum is known for boisterously cheering on her daughter at local swim meets. With similar enthusiasm, Blum, a supervisor in purchasing, has trained hundreds of UNMC employees to create purchase orders, quick checks, orders to General Supply and access reports through the computer system.

Children receive free dental sealants, fluoride treatments
Volunteers — junior and senior dental hygiene students from the UNMC College of Dentistry – recently placed sealants and provided fluoride treatments on the teeth of 175 second- and third-grade students at Liberty Elementary School in Omaha.

Samuel Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chairman of the department of pathology and microbiology at UNMC, has been named this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Scientist in Cancer Research by the Foundation for Promotion of Cancer Research of Japan.

UNMC’s low vision center offers hope
There are many factors that contribute to low vision, but there is only one clinic in Nebraska that devotes a full time service to helping patients gain maximum use of their remaining vision. The Low Vision Center at UNMC is dedicated to helping patients learn how to adapt to their low vision.
