Nominations sought for university-wide awards
The University of Nebraska Central Administration has announced nominating procedures and deadlines for five university awards – the Outstanding Research and Creative Activity Award, the Outstanding Teaching and Instructional Creativity Award, the University-wide Departmental Teaching Award, the Peter Kiewit Student Entrepreneurial Award and the Walter Scott Entrepreneurial Business Award.

UNMC blood drive scheduled for Sept. 23
About every two seconds, someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. On Thursday, Sept. 23, employees at UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, will have the opportunity to give blood so that others may have the opportunity to live.

UNMC vice chancellor tapped for national committee
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has named Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, to a 19-member External Advisory Committee for the AAMC’s Institute for Improving Medical Education (IIME).

Valet parking helps ease congestion
The Nebraska Medical Center has taken a step toward improved customer service with the introduction of a valet parking program. The service, which began Sept. 1, is available to patients, families and visitors from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Continuing education part of licensure renewal
As of Oct. 1, all licensed physicians must “attest” to having completed 50 hours of continuing medical education in order to renew their license. LB 1021, passed in 2002, requires all licensed physicians, osteopathic physicians and surgeons to complete 50 hours of Category 1 continuing medical education in a two-year period.

Assistant professor, Dr. Michael Dalton, dies
Michael Dalton, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy died Wednesday, Sept. 1, following a long illness. He was 45.

UNMC’s annual grant awards total historic $68 million
UNMC researchers ended the 2003-04 fiscal year with a record-setting annual total of $68 million in new research awards, bringing in $17.6 million in federal research grants during the fourth quarter (April, May, June).

UNMC is launching the first phase of a redesigned Web site that features a new graphic look, improved navigational features, and a home page that highlights UNMC’s mission of education, research and patient care. It also provides links to key campus areas and to its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center.
