Making sense of CMMS – – The first in a weekly series
CMMS, the “Comparative Medicine Management System,” is a new computerized business management system that includes (1) on-line animal ordering and “up to the minute” invoice access via UNMC’s Research Support System (RSS); (2) electronic barcode census; (3) on-line Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP) enrollment via RSS and (4) OHSP training via Blackboard. A key component of CMMS is the link between cost center and/or WBS numbers and active Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols. Testimony given on embryonic stem cell research
Three UNMC officials testified last week against two legislative bills that would have restricted embryonic stem cell research in Nebraska. Thomas Rosenquist, Ph.D., vice chancellor for research at UNMC, and David Crouse, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs, testified in opposition to Legislative Bill 437 and Legislative Bill 750 on Thursday before the Legislative’s Judiciary Committee. The two officials outlined the University of Nebraska’s official position against the two bills.

Haven to retire as associate dean of SAHP
When Mary Haven was named associate dean of UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions in 1995, she had an idea of how long she’d stay in the position. Now, capping her 10th year, Haven has announced plans to step down as associate dean at the end of June, or when a successor is found.

Search committee named for SAHP associate dean
College of Medicine Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., has appointed a search committee to replace Mary Haven, who has announced plans to step down as associate dean of UNMC’s School of Allied Health Professions.

UNMC to recognize the academic achievements of employees
UNMC supports and commends the educational achievements of its workforce. Employees who have earned associate, undergraduate, or graduate degrees or special certifications during calendar year 2004 will receive a special recognition of their individual achievement.

Dr. Zheng wins Gilmore award; lecture set for Tuesday
Dr. Jialin Zheng will receive the 2005 Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award on Tuesday. Dr. Zheng gives much of the credit for his research success to his research team and to several UNMC faculty members who have served as mentors to Dr. Zheng.

Dr. Turpen clowns around at the Shrine Circus
In research circles, Jim Turpen, Ph.D., is the guy with the largest research grant in the state. But, to 5-year-olds at the Shrine Circus he’s Ankor, the clown with the fiery orange hair, handlebar mustache and a pet lobster on his hand.

Dr. Turpen accepts more focused role in research administration
Paula Turpen, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for research, has agreed to accept a more focused and highly specialized role in UNMC research administration. Tom Rosenquist, Ph.D., vice chancellor for research, announced recently that Dr. Turpen has become the first UNMC Director of Research Resources. Dr. Turpen assumed her new responsibilities on March 1.
