The family of Karen Larsen has donated $2,000 to UNMC for pancreatic cancer research. The Underwood, Iowa, woman died Dec. 1, 2004, from pancreatic cancer.

UNMC to participate in Thursday’s statewide tornado drill
Today’s statewide tornado drill has been rescheduled for Thursday. UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UMA will participate in the drill, which is part of Severe Weather Awareness Week. The drill will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. with the issuance of a tornado watch. A mock tornado warning will be issued at 10:10 a.m. The drill is scheduled to end at 11 a.m.

UNMC physicians extend mission of service
Part of UNMC’s mission is to better the lives of Nebraskans. Edward O’Leary, M.D., and Ward Chambers, M.D., have taken this concept a step further. One might say a leap further. The cardiac specialists spent the first part of December in separate countries, trying to do what they could to help improve the health of the citizens there and the delivery of health care services.

Researcher lands grant for pancreatic cancer registry
Simon Sherman, Ph.D., director of the Bioinformatics Shared Resources at UNMC, has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for further development of the Pancreatic Cancer Collaborative Registry (PCCR) as well as biomedical computing tools for pancreatic cancer research. Funding is expected to be available by April 1.
