Osteoporosis among African Americans studied
The first studies published on low bone density and fracture-related outcomes among African American patients indicate that osteoporosis is not only a painful word, it can be debilitating – even lethal – and at a rate far out of proportion to outcomes for Caucasians. Ted Mikuls, M.D., assistant professor in rheumatology and immunology at UNMC, is primary investigator and co-author of two recently published studies.

Kearney to host disaster training course Aug. 23-26
Nebraska now ranks among the three largest training centers in the National Disaster Life Support program. On Aug. 23 to 26, the Holiday Inn at 110 Second Ave. in Kearney will host a three and one-half day course designed to provide participants with the necessary skills to become course instructors in bioterrorism and natural disaster preparedness.

Surveys to assist UNMC’s re-accreditation efforts
UNMC’s faculty, staff and returning students will have the opportunity to share their views of UNMC during the next few weeks via electronic surveys that will be sent to their e-mail accounts. Survey data will be used as UNMC prepares for re-accreditation by the North Central Association of College and Schools.

Roberta Rogers spent hours around her kitchen table, chatting with old friends, welcoming new ones and introducing them to each other. Now, UNMC employees will be able to share in that tradition. On Thursday, Roberta Rogers’ family and friends unveiled a “conversational grouping” consisting of a love seat, two chairs and small table.

Dr. Wengel named psychiatry chairman
Steven Wengel, M.D., who has served has interim chairman of the UNMC Department of Psychiatry for the past 16 months, has been named chairman of the department.
The appointment, which was effective July 1, was announced by John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.
