Two physicians appointed to administrative positions
Two UNMC physicians have been appointed to administrative positions within the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. Tim McCashland, M.D., has been named the medical director of liver transplantation, and Mark Mailliard, M.D., has been appointed the interim chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology. Drs. McCashland and Mailliard assumed their new roles Sept. 1 when Michael Sorrell, M.D., stepped down from his administrative duties. Dr. Sorrell will continue to treat patients in his general practice.

Shortage of oncologists is nationwide
UNMC and oncologists around the country face a shortage of doctors entering and staying in the profession. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the world’s leading professional organization representing physicians who treat people with cancer, has planned an oncologist workforce study.

$5 million gift to augment existing Olson Center
A $5 million gift commitment by Dr. Leland and Dorothy Olson of Omaha will enable UNMC to create the city’s first comprehensive outpatient center focused exclusively on women’s health.

President of National Institute of Cancer in France at UNMC

Legacy of African American nurses honored
This year’s Tuskegee Airmen International Convention in Omaha featured the first formal tribute to black women in uniform ever held at a Tuskegee Airmen national convention. More recently, Valda Boyd Ford, director of UNMC Community and Multicultural Affairs, reprised her presentation on campus.
