Inside the Newborn Intensive Care Unit
Ava Saunders was supposed to become a big sister last month. Her brother had other plans. Griffin was born in July — 13 weeks early and weighing only 2 lbs. 2 oz. He spent 79 days in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) at The Nebraska Medical Center before going home. On Nov. 16, the hospital’s tiniest patients will move into the new NICU in the Hixson-Lied Center for Clinical Excellence.

The new surgical suites inside the Hixson-Lied Center for Clinical Excellence are designed for any kind of procedure from large, open transplant surgery to minimally invasive operations. The operating rooms will open in three stages, with the first 15 rooms coming on line in January.
