UNMC researchers receive NIH grant to study heart failure

A team of cardiovascular scientists at the University of Nebraska Medical Center has received a five-year grant totaling more than $10.6 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study the mechanism for cardiovascular deterioration in heart failure. This is a renewal of a previous five-year grant.

UNMC Maternal Care Program receives baby kits

Chris Andersen, 16, is on the threshold of achieving scouting’s highest honor – Eagle Scout – thanks to the completion of his unique Eagle Scout project – the Infant Care Project. The Infant Care Project resulted in 52 new baby kits that will be distributed to needy mothers served by UNMC’s Maternal Care Program, a division of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

Children’s Oncology Group taps UNMC chairman

On Dec. 1, James Anderson, Ph.D., chairman of the UNMC Department of Preventive and Societal Medicine, accepted an appointment as group statistician and director of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Statistics and Data Center. As director, Dr. Anderson will manage and coordinate the operation of the Statistics and Data Center, which has offices in Omaha, California and Florida.

Gingerbread home to raise money for MMI

Gingerbread homes have long been a holiday tradition. But now, thanks to an Omaha hotel, the Munroe-Meyer Institute will receive some much needed funding for its adult recreation program through the auction of a special gingerbread home.

Potter’s House selected as 2005 designer showhouse

Over the next several months, the Potter’s House will be transformed into a designer’s showcase. On Monday, the historic residence at 428 S. 38th St. was named the 2005 designer showhouse for the 30th annual Omaha Symphony Guild and American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) fundraiser.The UNMC-owned residence provides housing for transplant patients and their families.

Paralympic athletes share bond with physicians, staff

In October, James Neff, M.D., professor of orthopedic surgery, got to do something he had never done before – hold a real Olympic medal in his hands. It was the bronze medal patient Lora Webster had earned with the women’s sitting volleyball team at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, Greece. In fact, Dr. Neff and Peter Coccia, M.D., professor, department of pediatrics hematology-oncology, share a total of three patients who competed at the Paralympics Games.

Tickets still available for Night of a Thousand Stars on Dec. 4

Time is running out to buy tickets for the 12th annual “Night of a Thousand Stars,” which will take place Saturday, Dec. 4, at various sites across Nebraska. The event benefits the Nebraska AIDS Project.
