UNMC receives grant to better diagnose lymphomas
Wing “John” Chan, M.D., professor of pathology and co-director of the Center for Lymphoma and Leukemia Research at UNMC, is principal investigator of a nearly $9 million grant awarded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Researchers hope the work of the grant ultimately will increase the chance of survival of lymphoma patients.

Disaster Behavioral Health Conference July 14-15
The terrorist bombings in London last week sent a chilling reminder to all of us that the threat of terrorism continues to exist. For the third consecutive year, area mental health professionals will get together to look at the psychological aspects of dealing with disasters, as more than 200 people are expected to attend the Nebraska Disaster Behavioral Health Conference on July 14-15 in downtown Omaha.

UNMC, Burger King partner to beat cancer
Burger King again has teamed with the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center to support childhood cancer research at UNMC. The “BK Beat Cancer for Kids” promotion is running through July at 68 Burger King locations in Nebraska and Council Bluffs. The program is an extension of Liz’s Legacy, a fund to advance cancer research and care through the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

Continuing ed requires conflict of interest disclosures

Nursing class pays tribute to former teacher
The UNMC College of Nursing class of 1965 decided to celebrate its 40th reunion by paying tribute to a cherished teacher and continuing a lifelong commitment to helping others. The class, in cooperation with the University of Nebraska Foundation, established the Esther Sock Dworak Memorial Fund as a tribute to the late Esther Sock Dworak, a pediatrics instructor and class sponsor. The fund will benefit the needs of children at the Family Health Care Center in south Omaha.

Nebraska participate in health/science meet
Seventy-three eighth-grade students from 31 schools across Nebraska attended UNMC’s 13th annual Health/Science Meet June 9-11, for an educational and fun experience. The meet’s goal is to inspire students, especially those from rural communities, to pursue careers in health care.

June term helps students prepare for rotations
Matt Stottle threaded the needle and slid a single black stitch into taut, pink skin. Within minutes, a zipper of black X’s covered the incision. Stottle, a third-year medical student who started his clinical rotation Tuesday, recently spent three full days learning basic clinical skills during an intense, hands-on instructional course known as “June Term.”

IAIMS grant hopes to merge information cultures

That’s why the UNMC Health Informatics Program was thrilled to receive a competitive, two-year Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS) Planning Grant from the National Library of Medicine to explore the information cultures of UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center, its clinical partner.
