UNMC study in JAMA finds old drug still reliable, safe in treating Staph

A University of Nebraska Medical Center research team has determined that a longtime antibiotic, vancomycin, is still effective in treating Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections and that physicians should continue to use the drug even though several newer antibiotics are now available in the marketplace.

Dr. O’Dell receives prestigious arthritis award

James O’Dell, M.D., a national leader in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, recently received the 2014 Lee C. Howley Sr. Prize for Research in Arthritis. The award, bestowed by the Arthritis Foundation, recognizes team science in action that will lead to a faster cure for arthritis and related diseases.

The landscape of medical education is undergoing a significant paradigm shift. In an effort to meet these needs and enhance medical student education, the Office of Medical Education (OME) has been formed. The OME merged existing services, bringing the Educational Support Office (ESO) and the Curriculum and Educational Research Office (CERO) under one umbrella.

Second Ebola patient released

UNMC’s second Ebola patient, Ashoka Mukpo, was released from the Biocontainment Unit Wednesday after multiple tests confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that he was free of Ebola.
