Advocate for cancer research, Liz Karnes, dies

Liz Karnes, an Omaha community leader who inspired many during her battle with cancer and various complications, died Thursday morning at her home. She was 53. “Liz was not just a strong advocate for Omaha, but she also was a strong advocate for UNMC and the Eppley Cancer Center,” said Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Eppley Cancer Center.

UNMC researchers land $5.6 million grant

A UNMC cancer researcher Ercole Cavalieri, D.Sc., is heading a $5.6 million multi-institutional research study to investigate the role estrogen plays in causing breast cancer and to look for new approaches to detecting and preventing the disease.

E-OnCall, the campus’ new online OnCall system, is now available for employees to view on NHS WebSource, the hospital Intranet. E-OnCall is a one-stop, Web-based application that contains all on-call schedules for hospital-based departments, academic departments and private practice physicians. See story for details.

College of Nursing moves to online testing

It’s test day in the College of Nursing. But for many students, that does not mean a trip to the classroom with a No. 2 pencil and an eraser. For some nursing students, it means a trip to the computer lab and about a hundred clicks of the mouse. This semester, 11 College of Nursing graduate and undergraduate classes are taking tests online using Perception software.
