East Utility Plant Open House Today
Faculty, staff and students are invited to take a close look at the utility plant at an open house today (Thursday, May 29). The open house will run from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the plant, located at 40th Street and Dewey Avenue.
Over the past year and a half, on the corner of 40th and Dewey, the campus has seen the transformation of a parking lot into a “state of the art” East Utility Plant.

531 students receive diplomas from UNMC

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson has secured $5 million from the Department of Defense budget authorization and will earmark the money as a “building block” for UNMC’s goal to establish a national bioterrorism center on campus.

Visiting stroke expert details unique treatment involving cell infusion
A unique procedure involving the transplantation of human brain cells as a treatment for stroke was the focus of a Grand Rounds presentation Thursday afternoon at UNMC.
Lawrence Wechsler, M.D., professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, made the presentation. Dr. Wechsler is in Omaha as one of the speakers at a daylong conference Friday on acute stroke management. The conference is a collaborative event bringing together all the major hospitals in Omaha and Lincoln involved in acute stroke care.

Researchers use microarray technology to perform gene mutation analysis in lymphoma
Researchers from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) have combined to perform the first mutation analysis using microarray technology on the ATM gene in lymphoma. The study was reported in the April 29 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

UNMC researchers: Estrogen could be predictor of breast cancer risk
A team of researchers at UNMC has determined that certain estrogen metabolites could serve as biomarkers to predict the risk of someone getting breast cancer. The results of the study are published in the April issue of Carcinogenesis.

Lab automation poses advantages to hospital staff, patients
Resembling a racetrack, the conveyor system transports specimens in glass tubes to testing stations around the NHS University Hospital lab. The automated lab, which goes live Wednesday (April 30), will reduce medical errors, expedite patient test results and save money.
