Administrative Professionals Day celebration Friday was a big success, with 68 people attending the breakfast and about 210 people attending the lunch. The celebration was sponsored by the UNMC Employee Growth Advocacy Development Organization (EGAD).

Caring attitude makes Dr. Lahue special
Bob Lahue, Ph.D., makes people feel comfortable. It starts with his name – he prefers Bob, not Robert – and extends to all he does as a cancer researcher and teacher of graduate students at UNMC’s Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases. Dr. Lahue is one of four faculty members being honored with the UNMC Outstanding Teaching Award at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Tuesday, April 20. This is the second in a series of profiles on the award recipients.

Grandsons provide Easter present for UNMC faculty members
William Gust, M.D., and Rowen Zetterman, M.D., have been close friends for more than 30 years. But, the longtime faculty members from the UNMC Internal Medicine Department will always look back on Easter week 2004 as one of their fondest memories. The two physicians added new grandsons to their families with both babies being born at University Tower earlier this week.

Beginning this month a series of two-hour presentations called CARING with CLAS[S] will be presented to look at bridging the cultural and linguistic gaps in health care. The presentations are open to everyone and provide a means of understanding Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) standards.

Gene therapy being used in cystic fibrosis study
UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, have been selected as one of 12 sites participating in a study using gene therapy techniques to treat cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

UNMC researcher studies promising nicotine vaccine
Sam Sanderson, Ph.D., knows all about serendipity. A biochemist, Dr. Sanderson was conducting some experiments several years ago to determine how certain tiny molecules called peptides interact with the immune system. One peptide surprisingly jumped out at him in the experiments.

Medical students unveil Match Day destinations
Joel Winner lived up to his name on Match Day. The Lincoln native was all smiles Thursday when he announced he would be going to the University of Hawaii Affiliated Hospitals in Honolulu for his psychiatry residency.
On Thursday, Winner and 103 other members of the UNMC College of Medicine Class of 2004 learned where they would spend the next three to six years doing their residency training. See UNMC Today on Monday for more photos and a complete list of Match Day results.

UNMC vice chancellor has harrowing experience in Haiti
For Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies at UNMC, the past two weeks have been like a bad dream. Fortunately, this dream had a happy ending – thanks in large part to the efforts of the staff of U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson and several UNMC administrators.

Resilience of spirit found in Kabul
KABUL, Afghanistan — Kabul is unlike any place I’ve ever been. The city is overflowing with people who have returned from refugee camps and who are now unafraid to walk the streets. There are many signs that show the number of organizations from all over the world that have come to Kabul to be a part of its rebuilding.
