Low-vision center offers new hope for those with sight problems

As an ophthalmologist, Carl Camaras, M.D., says there’s nothing more frustrating than not being able to help patients with their vision issues.
The Weigel Williamson Center for Visual Rehabilitation will help reduce such experiences for the region’s ophthalmologists, Dr. Camaras said Friday at a groundbreaking for the new center.

Study determines rural meth users at greater risk

A new study has determined that rural methamphetamine users are younger when they start using meth, are more likely to use intravenously, have more psychoses, smoke more cigarettes and are more likely to be alcoholic than urban methamphetamine users. The findings were reported in the April issue of the American Journal on Addictions.

Students honor ‘first patients’ at anatomical gift ceremony

As Sova and fellow first-year medical students were about to work with cadavers for the first time, Dr. Binhammer, a long-time anatomy professor at UNMC, said, “Once you’re done with your own bodies, send them here, we’d love to use them.”

Helms to receive community service award

For Mary Helms — community service indeed comes with all the good feelings often associated with giving one’s time for a worthy cause — a sense of purpose and gratification in being a positive force in a community. But there’s another aspect of the work not typically associated with volunteering that keeps Helms, associate director of the McGoogan Library of Medicine, signing up for service commitments. “I find service work to be incredibly enjoyable,” said Helms, who will receive the UNMC Spirit of Community Service Award during the chancellor’s annual faculty meeting April 24. “I wouldn’t do it if I weren’t having fun.”
