Diabetes Center opens as one-stop shop
The Nebraska Medical Center is now the premier place for specialized diabetes care and education. The hospital’s new Diabetes Center, which opens today, is the only one of its kind in the state and in the region dedicated to offering comprehensive care for patients with diabetes.

UNMC physician involved in the national guidelines study looking at fevers in ICU patients. A UNMC infectious disease specialist, Andre Kalil, M.D., was one of 11 experts from around the country to develop guidelines for what physicians should do when critically ill patients develop a new fever.

Neurological sciences chairman helps lead study comparing stenting vs. surgery
UNMC’s Pierre Fayad, M.D., was one of six researchers on the executive committee for a major national study — reported in the April 10 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine — that compared stenting and surgery in high-risk patients with significant narrowing of the carotid artery and found that there is no significant difference in the long-term outcomes of these patients three years after either one of the procedures was performed to open up the artery.

Seminar to focus on research integrity and publication guidelines
Research integrity guidelines from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) should be familiar to all active researchers at UNMC. In addition, the new requirements for submission of NIH-supported publications to PubMed Central for public access and databases — with other forms of information technology that track scientific publications — allow increased access to, and analysis of, the vast amount of information produced by today’s researchers. UNMC enters into partnership with Japanese scientists
While growing up in Russia, UNMC’s Alexander “Sasha” Kabanov, Ph.D., said he acquired an extreme admiration for the work of Japanese researchers. His admiration, Dr. Kabanov said, was refined by his scientist father’s consistent praise and attention to the scientific contributions of Japanese scientists.
