Division of Cardiovascular Medicine – New Chief’s Vision

Vincent Pompili, MD, stepped into the role of chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine in November. Although the Division of Cardiology was the historic name for the division, when Dr. Pompili accepted the position, it evolved to rename the division.

VA Same-Day Access Clinic

There has been a change at the Veterans Affairs Nebraska Western Iowa Health Care System. The faculty and resident-staffed continuity-of-care clinic has changed its focus from a to an open-access clinic where immediate veteran needs can be met.

Golden Humanism Honor Society

Three Internal Medicine faculty members, Dave O’Dell, MD, Sarah Richards, MD and Chelsea Navarette, MD; one Internal Medicine resident, Shana Peper, MD; and a former Internal Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Program scholar, current fourth-year medical student, Monica Krause, were inducted into UNMC’s second class of the Golden Humanism Honor Society.

UNMC Management Series And Foundations for Success Grads

Four Internal Medicine members completed the UNMC Management Series earlier this year. They were Debra Bergman, Allison Blatchford, Vonnetta Byington and Cindy Marr. Four Internal Medicine staff members completed the Foundations for Success program this year, as well. They were: Sherry Andersen, Karen Brungardt, Kristi Graybill and Travis Weyant. Correction to May Issue

In the May Internal Medicine Newsletter in the “Education Update” it was incorrectly stated that Christopher Smith, MD, Division of General Internal Medicine, had spent time over the past year mentoring residents, specifically in writing case reports and submissions for national meetings. Michael Smith, MD, in the Division of General Internal Medicine was the person who mentored the residents. The efforts of Dr. Michael Smith and the residents paid off with 10 cases being accepted at the National Society of General Internal Medicine conference and four poster presentations at a Society of Hospital Medicine national meeting.
