Scientist to continue multiple sclerosis research
Kalipada Pahan, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry, oral biology and pharmacology at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, has received a five-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study potential new anti-neuroinflammatory drugs for multiple sclerosis.

Peck honored for work with women, children
Magda Peck, Sc.D., has championed women’s and children’s health for much of her professional life. On Thursday, UNMC’s professor of pediatrics was nationally recognized for her work when she was named an “Outstanding Leader” by the Coalition for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology.

Eldercare is family affair for McQuade
Daniel McQuade doesn’t mind all the extra errands he does each month for his mother. “It’s not a burden,” said the ITS camera operator for UNMC. “It’s a privilege.” This is the second in a series of features highlighting UNMC employees who are involved in eldercare issues. On Dec. 7, all employees are invited to the Eppley Science Hall to learn more about accessing eldercare services and information.

The Wellness Council of the Midlands (WELCOM) recently honored Bonita Tompkins, an assistant in the human resources department at UNMC, with the William M. Kizer “Light of Wellness” Award, recognizing employees who have made extraordinary healthy lifestyle changes as a result of their companies’ wellness programs.

Accessing eldercare services event for employees Dec. 7
More than 25 percent of American families are involved in some way with elder/parent care. Many of them also are juggling full-time job responsibilities. The challenges of this can be overwhelming.
UNMC employees can learn more about caring for elderly parents, relatives and friends and the coordinated services available at UNMC, University Medical Associates (UMA) and The Nebraska Medical Center at an eldercare event on Tuesday, Dec. 7 in the Eppley Science Hall.

Center for cellular signaling approved
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents Friday approved UNMC’s proposal to establish the Nebraska Center for Cellular Signaling. Funding for the center comes from a five-year, $9.9 million grant that UNMC received last year.
