Jan Atwood, Ph.D., receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Jan Atwood, Ph.D., of UNMC’s College of Nursing, recently received the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the society’s annual conference in Chicago. The Midwest Nursing Research Society, which covers a 13-state region, has more than 1,400 members. For 20 years, it has been promoting the growth of nursing research quality and quantity in the Midwest.

The UNMC College of Nursing and Omaha and Lincoln chapters of the Nebraska Student Nurse Association, will host an open house and job fair Saturday, March 9, from noon to 2 p.m. The event is targeted toward those interested in learning about nursing careers, advanced nursing degrees and available jobs in nursing.

College of Dentistry dean receives national Award of Excellence from peers
John Reinhardt, D.D.S., dean of the UNMC College of Dentistry, recently received the Award of Excellence from the Academy of Operative Dentistry at its annual meeting in Chicago.
The award, presented annually since 1986, recognizes recipients for their service to the academy, free-sharing and innovative ideas in the teaching of operative dentistry, and continuous promotion of excellence in operative dentistry at the national and international level.

Dental students achieve 100 percent pass rate on national exam
Dental students at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln have demonstrated they are prepared for the challenges of practicing dentistry when they graduate in May. All of the 43 senior students recently passed Part 2 of the American Dental Association’s National Board Examination.

The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff will host open houses next week in Scottsbluff and Alliance. The Panhandle Diabetes Outreach Project in Scottsbluff will be celebrating its one-year anniversary and its grand opening expansion in Alliance.

Study examines whether perceived inability to give back in relationship causes self-health neglect
UNMC College of Nursing associate professors Betty Craft, Ph.D., and Sister Carol Grasser, Ph.D., received a $73,500, one-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging, to determine whether the inability to reciprocate in a relationship may cause older adults to neglect their health needs.

Dr. Atwood honored for excellence in academic nursing profession
Jan Atwood, Ph.D., has spent her life in the pursuit of improving the lives of people through nursing care, education and research. This month, she was honored for the impact she has made at UNMC, through a Florence Niedfelt Professorship at the UNMC College of Nursing. The endowed, three-year appointment honors and rewards an outstanding faculty member for excellence in research, teaching, leadership, mentoring of colleagues and students, innovative leadership in a clinical service project, and involvement and work in organizations outside the college.

UNMC begins study on new drug for potential treatment of acute myeloid leukemia
UNMC researchers have begun the first clinical study in the United States to examine the safety and effectiveness of a unique new drug that may have potential in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). AML, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow, is the most common type of acute leukemia in adults, with an estimated 10,000 new cases a year.
