Rural health grant enables Chadron students to visit UNMC

UNMC recently hosted a group of Chadron High School students interested in health careers through a grant funded by the UNMC Rural Health Education Network. The purpose of the visit was to teach students more about the careers available in the health sciences.

UNMC DOC Carnival sends anti-smoking message

More than 60 students from UNMC’s Adopt-a-School partners recently learned that anti-smoking education can be fun. The annual DOC (Doctors Oughta Care) Sports Carnival, hosted by UNMC family medicine physicians, UNMC medical students and staff, educates youngsters on why they should never start smoking.

Nursing’s West Nebraska Division plans asthma awareness event

The UNMC College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff and community partners will hold the Third Annual Asthma Awareness event Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which is open to the public, will offer free asthma screenings and education at the Monument Mall in Scottsbluff, 2302 Frontage Road.

Dentistry provides anatomy lessons to 700 high school students

Stanton Harn, Ph.D., has been providing educational experiences for Nebraska high school students for so long that many have become students in his UNMC College of Dentistry classes. For the past 25 years, students taking anatomy and physiology classes have traveled to the UNMC College of Dentistry to add another dimension to their learning by viewing human cadavers.

UNMC earns high marks from postdocs

Postdoctoral fellows may be among the unsung heroes conducting research at UNMC, but they are singing the praises of the university. Results from a recently conducted survey show postdocs at the University of Nebraska, including those at UNMC, rank the university a great place to be a postdoc. Results of the Scientist magazine’s survey, “Best Places to Work for Postdocs,” were detailed in its Feb. 10 issue.

Researchers to study new approaches to reduce fatigue

Ann Berger, Ph.D, associate professor of nursing at the UNMC College of Nursing. is principal investigator of a $1.5 million, five-year grant to test new approaches for reducing fatigue in patients undergoing breast cancer treatment. The National Institute of Nursing Research, a division of the National Institutes of Health, funds the study.

Receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award is especially gratifying when family surrounds you. That was the case when UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and his wife, Beverly, traveled to Atlanta for a reception in which Dr. Maurer was honored with the Children’s Oncology Group award. See story for photos of the event.
