The current, fourth-quarter issue of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship features a story about a pilot study, which resulted in a $2.9 million grant to the UNMC College of Nursing to evaluate a new approach to prevent osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors after menopause.

Eighth-graders invited to compete in health/science meets

Nebraska eighth-graders are invited to compete in UNMC’s regional Health/Science Meet competition, which will be held at seven locations across Nebraska: Ainsworth, Grand Island, Lincoln, North Platte, Norfolk, Omaha and Scottsbluff.

Grant provides Nebraska nurses access to master’s degree

The UNMC College of Nursing has received a two-year, $580,000 continuation grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to recruit more rural nurses into a master’s degree that prepares nurses as leaders.

Dental class of ’95 honors classmate

Though Michael York spent almost four years in dental school, he never graduated with his classmates from the UNMC College of Dentistry Class of ’95. York was a senior dental student when his life was cut short by a brain tumor more than eight years ago. Alumni from the class of ’95 recently held a dedication ceremony to pay tribute to York.

UNMC, Creighton receive national community service award

For their significant contributions to local and statewide communities, Omaha’s two academic medical centers have been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Community Service Award for 2003 from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Creighton University Medical Center and UNMC were recognized by the AAMC for their outstanding efforts in meeting the medical needs of people not served by traditional health-care systems.

Dentistry receives national award for children’s event

The UNMC College of Dentistry recently received the 2003 Community Preventive Dentistry Meritorious Award from the American Dental Association (ADA) Foundation for Children’s Dental Day, an event that provides free oral health care and education to underserved Nebraska children.

UNMC Mini-Medical School to address gaps in health care

UNMC and co-sponsors in 12 cities across Nebraska invite the public to participate in a free health educational series titled, Building Bridges to Better Health: Addressing Gaps in Health Care. The series will run on Thursdays, Nov. 6, 13 and 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (CDT). The public will learn about diabetes, cancer, infant mortality, and heart disease, while exploring how the conditions impact minority populations and community health.
