UNMC dental researcher receives Parkinson’s disease grant

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) has awarded Kalipada Pahan, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry, UNMC College of Dentistry, a two-year, $125,000 grant to study the effectiveness of a drug to stop the destruction of cells in mouse models with Parkinson’s disease.

Children receive free dental sealants, fluoride treatments

Volunteers — junior and senior dental hygiene students from the UNMC College of Dentistry – recently placed sealants and provided fluoride treatments on the teeth of 175 second- and third-grade students at Liberty Elementary School in Omaha.

Dental consortium to boost rural access to oral health care

The UNMC College of Dentistry has partnered with state dental associations in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, and South Dakota to form a consortium to address oral health access problems of underserved populations in rural areas. The consortium’s strong interest in the oral health of their citizens prompted them to form a partnership called Target Access: Great Plains Oral Health.

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners presented its annual Nebraska Nurse Practitioner Advocate Award recently to UNMC pulmonologist Anthony Floreani, M.D. The award recognizes an advocate for contributions in support of the role of the nurse practitioner.

Researcher receives grant to study multiple sclerosis drug

UNMC College of Dentistry researcher, Kalipada Pahan, Ph.D., has received a three-year, $274,000 grant from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to evaluate whether a drug well-known for its cholesterol-lowering effects may stop the destructive process of multiple sclerosis.

UNMC to conduct national study on breast cancer vaccine

UNMC has received a two-year, $500,000 grant to conduct a clinical breast cancer study to test the safety and effectiveness of a vaccine in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. The funding was awarded by Avon and the U.S. National Cancer Institute Progress for Patients Program. UNMC researchers expect to begin enrolling patients in January.
