AHEC Advisory Board holds semi-annual meeting at UNMC

The statewide Area Health Education Center Advisory Board members traveled across Nebraska last week to meet at UNMC a semi-annual meetings. The centers were created through federal grants as a way in which medical schools and community centers can cooperate to recruit and train health care professionals to serve in rural areas.

Advanced cancer, palliative care treatment guidelines released

In recognition of Cancer Awareness Month, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) in collaboration with the American Cancer Society has released the Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines for Patients, the latest in a groundbreaking series for individuals and their caregivers.
The Advanced Cancer and Palliative Care Treatment Guidelines help patients and physicians understand and respond to the range of medical, psychological, and social issues they may be facing.

Nursing professor honored for research abstract

Scottsbluff resident T. Kim Callahan Rodehorst, Ph.D., was one of three health providers who recently received awards from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology during a conference in San Francisco. Dr. Rodehorst is an assistant professor of nursing at UNMC’s College of Nursing West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff.

Nursing alum reflects on deployment to Iraq

Capt. Jeff Schrader will never forget the soldier who risked his own life to save the life of an Iraqi girl and fellow Americans. The soldier was one of many unsung heroes Schrader, a1994 graduate of the UNMC College of Nursing, cared for last year during his seven months in Iraq as an Army nurse anesthetist.

Researchers to study teen smoking cessation model

Researchers at UNMC have been awarded a grant for nearly $2.2 million to study a smoking cessation model that addresses the unique challenges of teenage smokers. The four-year grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Services.
