Study finds reduction in urinary tract infections
About 1 million people a year contract urinary tract infections (UTIs) due to catheters, said Mark Rupp, M.D., UNMC professor of internal medicine/infectious diseases and director of the Department of Healthcare Epidemiology at The Nebraska Medical Center. In an attempt to reduce infections caused by urinary catheters, Dr. Rupp and colleagues conducted a two-year study to determine the effectiveness of a new silver alloy, hydrogel-coated urinary catheter in reducing the rate of UTIs.

Researchers meet children, families affected by cancer
Researchers don’t always have the opportunity to meet those they are trying to help. Instead, they are busy in the laboratory studying cancer, writing papers and applying for grants. But recently, UNMC cancer researchers met a dozen children and adults affected by leukemia or lymphoma.

Johnson & Johnson is preparing to launch a promotional video, “Nurse Scientists: Committed to the Public Trust,” that will feature Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, and nine other nurse researchers from across the country. The 10-minute video promotes nursing research to meet the healthcare needs of the nation.

Music eases pain, anxiety after open-heart surgery
Researchers have found a potential way to reduce moderate to severe pain, and anxiety following open-heart surgery. It may be as simple as listening to music. A research team led by a UNMC College of Nursing doctoral student published the study in the November issue of Pain.

Nursing student, friends make patient’s dream come true
For two hours one October morning, Jacyn Brown was free. The former high school football star pedaled the recumbent bike four times around the huge parking lot as family and friends watched on the sidelines. Although the 26-year-old couldn’t see their smiles, he certainly heard their cheers.

Walk & Roll for Disabilities event Jan. 30
The C. Louis Meyer Foundation and the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute will hold its first “Walk & Roll for Disabilities” on Sunday, Jan. 30 to raise money for recreational and respite services for adults with developmental disabilities.

Children’s Oncology Group taps UNMC chairman
On Dec. 1, James Anderson, Ph.D., chairman of the UNMC Department of Preventive and Societal Medicine, accepted an appointment as group statistician and director of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) Statistics and Data Center. As director, Dr. Anderson will manage and coordinate the operation of the Statistics and Data Center, which has offices in Omaha, California and Florida.
