Honorary degree recipient to give May 12 lecture
UNMC has selected Linda Cronenwett, Ph.D., professor and dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, to receive a 2005 Honorary Doctor of Science degree. During her visit, Dr. Cronenwett will present a lecture titled, “Nursing’s Contributions to Healthcare Quality: Raising the Bar,” on Thursday, May 12.

Researchers evaluate treatment for lung disease
Researchers at UNMC are conducting a study to evaluate a new treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a debilitating and deadly lung disease. UNMC is one of 75 leading medical centers in North America and Europe participating in a phase III clinical trial that tests the potential of interferon gamma-1b.

Nursing faculty, students launch leadership academy
The UNMC College of Nursing has launched a leadership academy for students. The pilot program began in Omaha earlier this year with plans in the fall to expand to the college’s divisions in Scottsbluff, Kearney and Lincoln.

Nurse practitioner fulfills dream in poverty-stricken Bangladesh
As a young adult, Sandra Borden knew she wanted to work overseas in a remote place. She never really dreamed of being a nurse, nor did she seriously consider nursing as a career. But nursing was her destiny. The Gibbon, Neb., woman went on to build and staff a hospital in one of the poorest and most remote parts of the world. Last year, she received the UNMC College of Nursing Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding work in Bangladesh. Editor’s note: This story contains a graphic image.

UNMC psychiatrist reaches adolescents via airwaves
Two months ago, Omaha radio station KQCH (94.1 FM) launched a radio show that focuses on adolescent mental health issues. “Sunday Night Shrink Rap” is hosted by UNMC psychiatrist, Jim Sorrell, M.D., assistant professor, UNMC Department of Psychiatry, and on-air personally Damian Montez.

Ann Berger, Ph.D., UNMC College of Nursing associate professor of nursing, has been selected for a four-year appointment to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review (CSR). Dr. Berger is assigned to the Nursing Science: Children and Families Study Section.

Nursing professor presents at West African conference
Among the most rewarding career experiences for a professor is to see one’s colleagues and students progress in their chosen fields. UNMC’s Rosaline Olade, Ph.D., recently had the opportunity to experience that when she went to Abuja, the capitol of Nigeria, in Western Africa, where she had a major role in a nursing conference.

The UNMC College of Nursing Spring Research Colloquium for graduate nursing students was held last Wednesday in the Durham Outpatient Center. Thirty-eight master’s students and one doctoral student presented their research findings in 20 poster and eight oral presentations.

Family overwhelmed by donations for cancer research
On Sunday, Brian Brownrigg, his sister Kate Brownrigg, and cousin, Carolyn McMannama will run their first marathons — 26.2 miles — in the Spirit of St. Louis Marathon in St. Louis, Mo. The cause: to raise money for cancer research in honor of a family member, Betsy Brownrigg, and others battling ovarian cancer. The funds raised will benefit Liz’s Legacy.
