Learn about avian flu at UNMC’s Mini-Medical School
Scientists across the world are racing the clock to develop a vaccine to combat a deadly strain of avian H5N1 influenza, or bird flu, which has the potential to trigger a global pandemic. On April 13 and 20, UNMC’s Mini-Medical School will provide Nebraskans an opportunity to learn the facts about avian flu and how to prepare.

Bioterrorism preparedness expert on campus March 30
The UNMC College of Nursing will co-sponsor a March 30 visit by Kristine Gebbie, Dr.Ph., director of the Center for Health Policy at Columbia University School of Nursing in New York. She will present strategies of incorporating bioterrorism readiness competencies into health care curriculum.

Campus to celebrate Dr. Harman’s 90th birthday Feb. 14
The campus is invited to attend a reception in celebration of the 90th birthday of Denham Harman, M.D., Ph.D. The reception will take place in the University Tower Private Dining Rooms from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Dr. Harman, UNMC Emeritus Millard Professor of Medicine, is internationally known for his 1954 free radical theory of aging.

Memorial service Feb. 11 for Dr. Westmoreland
Donna Westmoreland, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNMC College of Nursing, died Tuesday following a battle with cancer. She was 57. A memorial service will be Saturday.

Web-based study hopes to improve health of African Americans
Researchers at UNMC and Saint Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Va., are collaborating on a unique study to evaluate whether an Internet-based program will help African American women living in rural areas improve their health. The program will focus on weight loss, healthy eating and increased activity.
