Antimalarial drug development shows promise

In their quest to prevent the ravages of malaria, Jonathan Vennerstrom, Ph.D., and his team of scientists worldwide are building on their success. Dr. Vennerstrom and his team of scientists from UNMC, Monash University in Australia, and the Swiss Tropical Institute in Basel, Switzerland, have received a $1 million grant that will enable them to develop a new antimalarial drug.

Burger King restaurants participate in fight against cancer

During the month of July, Burger King Restaurants customers in 73 locations will be asked if they would like to donate $1 to “Beat Cancer for Kids.” All donations will go toward childhood cancer research at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center.

Grant may help Nebraska meth addicts

Rep. Lee Terry recently visited UNMC to discuss with Bruce Buehler, M.D., a pilot program that may help change the epidemic of methamphetamine addiction not only in Nebraska, but in the United States. Terry was instrumental in getting $150,000 in funding for the Integrating Systems against Methamphetamine Abuse.

Students mix health, science, fun

In a UNMC pharmacy lab, three eighth-graders — Jordyn Lechtenberg, Devin Marie Jones and Tonnie Blount — conducted an experiment about the principles of drug compounding. The result: a recipe for rubbery-textured, gummy candy. The trio was among 58 eighth-graders from 31 schools across Nebraska to participate in UNMC’s 14th annual Health/Science Meet June 1-3.
