Student fair highlights UNMC’s vast research projects

Resume in hand, Jamie Haferbier saw first-hand the broad spectrum of research activities being performed at UNMC. “I’m exploring opportunities for summer work,” said the University of Nebraska at Omaha biology major, as she wandered through 44 research displays Tuesday at the second annual Student Research Fair in the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium.

UNMC to launch new radio commercials

Beginning Monday, UNMC will launch a new series of radio commercials. The six radio spots will air on stations in Omaha, Lincoln and 10 cities across the state. (See story to find out who will be featured and what stations — and Web site — will carry the commercials).

Eppley Cancer Center named to research consortium

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center has been named one of the 14 core transplant centers of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMTCTN), a research consortium set up by the National Cancer Institute and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Forty-five centers competed for the designation.

Aluminum tab tally near 500,000

UNMC and NHS employees have collected aluminum can tabs for the past two years and are nearly halfway to their goal of saving 1 million tabs for the Omaha Ronald McDonald House.

Bioterrorism report released; Dr. Hinrichs to coordinate university efforts

A UNMC physician will coordinate the University of Nebraska’s bioterrorism preparedness efforts. Steven Hinrichs, M.D., director of the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), was named to his new role Tuesday by NU President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D. Dr. Smith also released a bioterrorism preparedness report that was prepared by a task force chaired by UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.

The site offers a wide range of references relevant for faculty and staff who prepare and manage grants and contracts.

James Armitage, M.D., to be honored by Omaha Press Club

James Armitage, M.D., will join an illustrious group of local, regional and national figures when he is honored Feb. 4 by the Omaha Press Club.

Dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, Dr. Armitage will be recognized with the OPC’s most prestigious award — “The Face on the Barroom Floor.” He will be the 86th individual to receive this recognition, and the first physician ever to be honored.

UNMC and NHS employees, students and their families can receive discounted admission to UNMC’s Health and Technology Day Saturday, Feb. 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. With an employee ID, admission to the museum and events is $5 for adults and $2 for children.

UNMC’s internal medicine residency program scores among top programs

For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s internal medicine residency program has had 100 percent of its residents pass the 2001 American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) examination.

The accomplishment puts UNMC in the top 5 percent of programs across the country, said James O’Dell, M.D., professor of medicine, chief of the section of rheumatology and immunology, residency program director, and vice-chairman of the department of internal medicine.
