Dr. Porter to receive Gilmore Award at Wednesday’s symposium
If it weren’t for the research seed money that Tom Porter, M.D., received from UNMC in the mid-1990s, he’s not sure where the promising research on microbubbles might be. For certain, the research wouldn’t be as advanced as to begin an NIH-funded, Phase I clinical trial looking at the promise of microbubbles in drug delivery, as will occur at UNMC in the next year.
For his research work, Dr. Porter has been awarded the 2002 College of Medicine Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award.

Remnants of orphanage found in Computing Services Building
For nearly 60 years, the pages lay forgotten behind a floorboard in the Computing Services Building.
Then, in early February, while remodeling the building’s entryway, workers stumbled across “The Unfolding Story of the Child Saving Institute,” which was housed there from 1911 to 1975.

Nicotine replacement therapy may be a step toward smoking cessation
A UNMC researcher says the prescription nicotine inhaler could be used to reduce smoking as a step toward smoking cessation.
Results of the study, which was led by Stephen Rennard, M.D., were presented recently at the Eighth Annual Meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT).

Gov. Johanns outlines plans to reduce budget, cut NU another 3 percent
The University of Nebraska would face another 3 percent cut in its budget if Gov. Mike Johanns’ proposed budget is approved by the Legislature. Johanns announced his budget reduction plans at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said the proposed cut would stymie the momentum that UNMC has gained over the past couple of years.

Dr. Kitto bridged traditional, Native American medical approaches
UNMC alumnus Cecelia M. Kitto, M.D., of Niobrara died Sunday, Feb. 24, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, S.D. She was 60. Dr. Kitto graduated from the UNMC College of Medicine in 1979. A Native American, she served in various capacities for the Ponca and Omaha tribal populations.

Correction: UNMC receives $26.6 million in grants
Research investigators at UNMC received $26.6 million in grants during the last six months of 2001 — a 29 percent increase over the same period in 2000. Monday’s story reported that UNMC had received $27.6 million in grants for a 33 percent increase. (The story archived Feb. 25 in UNMC Today has been corrected).

UNMC/NHS promote reading among children, parents
Surrounded by toothy smiles, Richard Beebe sits at a child-size table, reading the classic adventures of “Curious George.” Three days a week, the 17-year-old shares his love of books with children in the UNMC/NHS Pediatric Clinic. Beebe is the clinic’s first volunteer reader in the national Reach Out and Read Program, which makes early literacy a standard part of pediatric care. (See story for details on getting involved).
