UNMC radiology residents rank high in passage of oral licensure exams

UNMC’s Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program ranks near the top 10 percent of all programs in oral exam pass rate. From 1997 to 2001, UNMC residents ranked 20th out of 196 programs nationally among those taking the American Board of Radiology oral exam for the first time. During that same time, 18 of UNMC’s 20 residents passed on the first attempt.

Screening event promotes cancer prevention, early detection

The UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, a partnership between UNMC and NHS, held its third annual free cancer screening at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church social hall Sunday, April 28. Nearly 100 men and women participated in the screening.

Jay Noren named university provost

University of Nebraska President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., has named Jay Noren, M.D., executive vice president and provost effective on or about July 1.

Noren (pronounced Nor-een), 57, has been director of the Health Workforce Project for the National Institute of Health Policy in Minneapolis since January 2001. He is a professor in the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, and a professor of family and community medicine in the College of Medicine in the Texas A&M University System.

Kelli Gibson wasn’t too surprised when six national awards went to the UNMC chapter of the Academy of Students of Pharmacy. But, when the UNMC student chapter received the Division AAA chapter achievement award, Gibson was floored.

Dr. Binhammer receives 2001 Alvin Earle Award

While his classroom challenges may give some a headache, Robert Binhammer, Ph.D., always prepares his students to succeed in the medical field.

On Friday, UNMC students recognized the educational contributions of Dr. Binhammer, professor and vice chairman of UNMC’s genetics, cell biology and anatomy department, by awarding him the 2001 Alvin Earle Outstanding Health Science Educator Award for exemplary teaching.

UNMC names new chair of UNMC’s obstetrics/gynecology department

Carl Smith, M.D., has returned to his alma mater as chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology.

“In many ways it’s like I never left,” said Dr. Smith, who earned his medical degree at UNMC in 1978.

Cattlemen’s Ball kicks off May 31 with four-person golf scramble

A four-person golf scramble will serve as the kickoff event for the fifth annual Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska on Friday, May 31 at the new Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln. The ball will take place Saturday, June 1 at the Benes Cattle Company, 25 miles northwest of Lincoln near Valparaiso, Neb.

UNMC has success in legislative session

UNMC shared in several successes this year in the Nebraska Legislature, said Bob Bartee, executive assistant to the chancellor.

“We owe a thank you to the numerous state senators who showed tremendous courage and vision as they voted on the bills that affected UNMC,” Bartee said Tuesday. “I thought that in strategic areas, we fared well during the session.”
