First AHEC director promotes health care in central Nebraska

Sarah Cunningham, Ph.D., was instrumental in bringing distance-learning opportunities to many rural schoolchildren of central Nebraska. Now, she’d like to play a role in helping children from those same areas become interested in health-care professions, so that some day, they’ll get their health education and practice in rural areas.

Dr. Cunningham is the first executive director of the Central Nebraska Area Health Education Center, the first such center in Nebraska.

UNMC study finds voice disability prevalent among telemarketers

Telemarketers are more likely than the general population to have voice problems that affect their productivity; however, precautions can be taken to help protect against problems, according to an article in the May issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, a member of the JAMA/Archives family of journals.

New parking rates announced for UNMC/NHS employees

UNMC/NHS will gain approximately 1,200 employee parking stalls in mid-November when construction is completed on Lot 50 – – the new $19.3 million parking structure along Emile Street. As a result, employees will have the option of moving into the six-level parking garage or to a more convenient parking lot on campus.

For the first time in four years, parking rates will increase effective July 1. The new rates will increase parking costs by $4.75 per month for most lots. The rate of the new parking garage, Lot 50, as well as the two existing parking structures (lots 4 and 5), will be $23 per month. Fees for lots 15 and 16, located on the east side of campus, are not increasing.

Albion family donates Angus breeding heifer for Cattlemen’s Ball auction

A few months ago, the Wolf family of the Wagonhammer Cattle Company near Albion, Neb., decided to take Cinderella to the ball — the 2002 Cattlemen’s Ball. The family donated Cinderella, a registered Angus yearling breeding heifer, for the live auction at the June 1 ball at the Benes Cattle Company near Valparaiso, Neb. They hope Cinderella will raise around $5,000 for cancer research.

At age 45, pharmacy graduate looks forward to second career

For 21/2 decades, Bill Young’s workday has been spent behind a radio microphone. His scenery will change next month, when he begins work behind a pharmacy counter.

Young, 45, will earn a pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) this weekend from the UNMC College of Pharmacy. Once he passes a board certification examination early next month, he’ll begin work at Albertson’s pharmacies in Omaha.

His name already is scattered on buildings across Omaha — in honor of his generous philanthropic nature. Now, Charles Durham’s face has made history as the 87th individual to be honored with the Omaha Press Club’s most prestigious award — “The Face on the Barroom Floor.”

The UNMC Faculty Senate Monday passed a resolution recognizing the contributions of William Berndt, Ph.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies. Dr. Crouse appointed interim vice chancellor for academic affairs at UNMC

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., has appointed David Crouse, Ph.D., as interim vice chancellor for academic affairs and interim dean for graduate studies. The appointment, subject to approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, would be effective June 1.
