Coalition forms to promote safety belt usage

Susanna Von Essen, M.D., and Robert Muelleman, M.D., medical director of NHS emergency services, are members of a statewide coalition geared to educate drivers and passengers about the importance of buckling up in all positions of the vehicle. The “Click It – Don’t Risk It” coalition is presenting a statewide awareness campaign with the goal of saving lives by increasing safety belt usage to 80 percent by 2004.

College of Medicine history presentation Aug. 22

The campus is invited to celebrate the UNMC College of Medicine’s centennial history Thursday, Aug. 22, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.

James Armitage, M.D., COM dean, will give the welcome and Robert Wigton, M.D., COM associate dean, will give a historical presentation. There will be free pizza and soda while supplies last.

Physical therapy education program celebrates 30 years

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first graduating class from UNMC’s division of physical therapy education. The program, which started in 1969 under the direction of Mary Ellen Sacksteder, graduated its first class in 1972. Since that time, 669 students have graduated from the program.

On Saturday, faculty, staff and students from the past 30 years will celebrate with campus tours and a dinner in downtown Omaha. The faculty and staff also have compiled a 120-page book highlighting the program’s history.

Former Surgeon Gen. to address health-care disparities

Former U.S. Surgeon Gen. Dr. David Satcher will be the keynote speaker at “Patterns of Transcultural Health Care,” a conference that will focus on delivering culturally and linguistically appropriate health care to diverse populations. Dr. Satcher will speak Thursday, Aug. 22 at 10:15 a.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Omaha.

UNMC/NHS to build epilepsy program

UNMC/NHS is providing new hope for patients with epilepsy by building the first comprehensive program of its kind in Nebraska and the surrounding states.

Sanjay Singh, M.D., joined UNMC’s neurological sciences department in July as the state’s first trained epileptologist. He will lead the Nebraska Epilepsy Program.
